Helping Your Student Rebuild Friendships in a Digital World
If there’s one thing parents have noticed over the past few years, it’s how much harder it has become for teenagers to make and keep real friendships. Before COVID-19, social interactions were a natural part of life–whether in school hallways, church services, and in neighborhood hangouts. Then, almost overnight, everything changed in 2020.
The world shut down, and screens became the only way to stay connected. Social media, Fortnite, Zoom, and endless scrolling filled the void. But now that life has returned to “normal,” many students struggle to build real-life friendships.
If your teen would rather text than talk, play games online instead of hang out in person, or seems anxious in social settings, you’re not alone. Studies show that screen time among teenagers has skyrocketed, with the average U.S. teen now spending over 8.5 hours a day on entertainment screens (Rideout & Robb, 2022). While technology has its benefits, it can also be an easy escape from the real relationships they truly need.
So how do we help students reconnect? How do we guide them back to real friendships?
God Created Us for Real Relationships
The Bible is clear: we were never meant to do life alone. In Genesis 2:18, God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone.” Proverbs 27:17 reminds us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Friendships aren’t just optional; they are essential to our spiritual growth.

Let’s be honest, friendship isn’t always easy, especially for teenagers who feel out of practice. Many of them spent two years building digital friendships, where they could control conversations, avoid awkward silences, and never worry about rejection. Now, real interactions feel intimidating or even unnecessary.
The Digital World Feels Safer, but It’s Not Enough
For many students, their phone is their safe place. A Instagram, a late night gaming session, or a TikTok doomscroll (we’ve been there) is easier than putting in the effort to build friendships in real life. But research shows that while social media offers instant connection, it often leads to greater loneliness, anxiety, and depression (Twenge, 2019).
Why? Because digital relationships lack depth. They don’t provide the accountability, encouragement, and spiritual sharpening (Proverbs 27:17) that real life friendships bring. Teenagers need face-to-face interactions to form strong emotional bonds, learn conflict resolution, and grow into healthy young adults.
CF Students: The Best Place to Start
So where can your middle or high schooler start rebuilding friendships? CF Students is one of the best places. Here’s why:
It’s a Place Where They Belong – Unlike school, where social groups can feel exclusive, CF Students (CFS) is designed to be inclusive. Everyone is welcome and no one sits alone. Galatians 3:28 reminds us that in Christ, there is no division. In other words—we all belong!
It Helps Build Real, Deep Friendships – At CFS, students don’t just sit in a room together; they worship, serve, grow, and have fun side by side. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says, “Two are better than one… if either of them falls down, one can help the other up.” Teenagers need friends who will challenge and encourage them in their faith.
It Provides Godly Role Models – Friendships are important, but so is mentorship. CFS connects students with leaders who care. These adults listen to what they’re going through, give biblical advice, and walk alongside them through life’s ups and downs (1 Corinthians 11:1) because it takes a village.
How You Can Help as a Parent
If your student is hesitant about returning to church, start small:
Encourage them to invite a friend. It’s easier when you already know someone.
Bring them during one of our fun events to break the ice.
Remind them that building friendships takes time and effort.
The digital world may offer easy connection, but it will never replace the richness of real friendships. Jesus created your teen for more than likes, FaceTime, and Snapstreaks. He designed them for deep, meaningful relationships that will shape both their faith and their future.
The best place to start? CF Students—where we are here to help you and your family follow Jesus.
